Framed botanical bookplate
Framed and mounted botanical bookplate of Rosa Primula. This beautiful illustration is from a book called Roses published in the 1950’s and is illustrated by Pierre-Joseph Redoute.
Napoleon Bonaparte, a frequent visitor to Redoute’s studio, once expressed his disappointment and astonishment that a painter so gifted should waste his time in painting roses instead of recording the great events in history. Yet Redoute, by the publication of Les Liliacees and Les Roses, was himself to make history in the world of botanical art.
The publication of Les Roses began in 1817 and continued over the following seven years until three folio volumes in thirty parts had been presented. Their success was unique and today Redoute’s name still reigns supreme among botanical artists.
Extra large the plate itself measures 30 × 40.5 cm however this is partly covered by a mount and then the overall measurement including the frame is 46 × 57cm.
The frame is wooden and vintage and has minor digs the largest of which is 2cm and is on the top right hand corner of the frame (and can be seen in the last photo). This could easily be painted if required.
